RM of St Laurent- Flood Protection Plan

They are here!

We will be getting about a kilometer of geotubes and the installation will be starting today – at least the preparation work.

Geotubes
Where : First off all locations are approximate. There are several things that determine placement and how far they will be placed in any location including the limited numbers of geotubes and best placement as per the recommendation of the engineers, and any physical impediments such as large treed areas, etc..

a. There will be geotubes connecting with the RM of Woodlands to approximately lot 237 Venice Road ( Twin Lakes Beach).
b. There will be geotubes for approximately 500 meters starting just north of Laurentia road.
c. There will be some geotubes at Meadowlark/Carp beach
d. There will be some geotubes at Johnson Beach.

All locations will have the super sandbags removed before installation of the geotubes and those bags will be re-deployed to areas as part of the scour apron plan.

The Scour Apron
The scour apron will bring at least a second row of super sandbags. this scour apron is made of geotek fabric and will extend out from the super sandbags towards the water up to approximately 6-8 feet. The purpose is to stop the erosion of sand from under the super sandbags and ensure they remain in place to act as proper wave attenuation. The apron will actually collect sand over time as the waves come over it and withdraw. There will have to be breaks made in the current super sandbag rows for the apron to be installed and then these will be closed up. Not all locations are suitable for the installation and we have some limits on quantity. This product is being specially fabricated for our project.

We do not plan on having anyone working on the long weekend to ensure safety of the residents and beach users. During the week we ask people to please give wide birth to any worker and machinery for their own safety as well as safety of the operators.

You can build your own stairs over the super sandbags with small sand bags. Please do not use anything else that could puncture or ruin the geotek protecting the bags or the scour apron. We have lots of small sandbags available. If sandbags are not present at sand stockpiles at each beach, please let us know and we will get some out there as soon as possible.

The EOC will be closed for the weekend.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend,

Barb McManus
