Twin Beach Clean Up Update

You are here: Home / Media Bulletins / Twin Beach Clean Up Update

August 2, 2012 //  by twinlakes//  Leave a Comment

Hi Jack,

Hoping you can help with this.

As you are aware I am currently looking into organizing a Twin Beach clean up. By this I mean trying to locate, remove or identify the debris that is in the water along Twin Beach. Through Mike Hameluck an acquaintance who is a scuba diver I have been put in contact with Ron who is with the Underwater Council of Manitoba and has indicated a keen in organizing a team of qualified divers to come out to our beach and attempt to clean or identify what is in the water from last years disastrous event. This would be a volunteer or give back to the community type effort on their behalf and would require people from our association to be involved. At this time I would like to see if we can generate any interest for volunteers from our association that might be willing to help out. I believe this is important to those who want their beach back as well as send a message to the government that we are serious.

Right now this is in the planning stage however Mike  has been in contact with Steve Ashton (Water Stewardship) to provide some form of financial support which if possible would likely be done through the RM. I would probably ask the RM to aid in the removal and hauling of debris to land fill. You and I have both spoken to IRHA and may receive some form of support regarding meals. Ron (UCM) has been working on organizing a preliminary dive to see what conditions are like as well as mapping out the area and such. Ron is also looking into other resources we may be able to utilize. It is important to note that this would a trial effort at Twin Beach only for now. Please remember this is strictly a volunteer project and not a government run program.

What I’m asking from you today is to communicate to people in our association and see if there are people willing to be part of this  project and to let Ron know how we can support his team as they may require. I am totally leaving logistics of the actual clean up in the hands of Ron as safety will be one of our greatest concerns.
Things I may need for this project.

A site for camping accommodations for few people that may not have camping gear.
I would want to put on a BBQ for the volunteers and perhaps a breakfast.
A shoreline support team to assist with bringing debris to the shore.
Perhaps a few boats

We have received reports from a few of our residents that, this past weekend, they located a number of rocks in the lake that had zebra mussels attached to them.It appears the mussels have arrived at our beach. Please let folks know, and especially children know - as if they are in the water playing, and they step on rocks with zebra mussels attached, those little buggers can be razor sharp, and could easily cut someone's exposed skin.FYI. ... It is our unfortunate duty to share with you some information provided to us at the AGM last weekend by the RM of Woodlands. It appears that the agreement between Woodlands and St Laurent for winter snow plowing has been dissolved, and is no longer in place. As a result, St Laurent will not be plowing the road this coming winter. This is not due to the councils of either RM, both of whom remain in favour. The problem is due to the union in the RM of Woodlands, that has objected to the agreement, as it considers it a form of outsourcing, and a violation of the collective agreement. I know from talking to numerous of the full time residents of Woodlands that they were very pleased last winter with the impact of the agreement, and I have no doubt that you will find this news disappointing.Snow plowing will return to the format that was in place prior to last winter.I am told that the collective agreement is coming up for renegotiation in the next year or so, and the RM of Woodlands will try to get this arrangement into the union agreement when it does. No guarantees.Fyi. ... See MoreSee Less

A very big THANK YOU to Will Jones, past president of the TLBA. As president for the last few years, Will made it his focus to help individual members with their issues, concerns and problems, during all four seasons. Additionally, he put considerable effort into issues relating to environmental cleanup, solving the issue with ghost nets in the water, a decontamination station for zebra mussels, election communications, coordination with the other beach associations, and more. Will was always available to lend an ear to anyone who needed help.Thank you for all your efforts Will, Twin Lakes Beach is better for them! ...
